Val was admitted to the bar in 1999 after completing a double degree in Arts and Law at the University of Otago.
Val works across a number of different but often interconnected areas of practice including complex relationship property disputes, all manner of family court concerns, criminal and employment law. She is a Court appointed Lawyer for the Child. It is the diversity of her work that she enjoys the most and which enables her to bring a broad understanding and solution based focus to the issues confronting her clients. She is a strong advocate for empowering those clients and is grateful for the opportunity to work with them in order to achieve positive results.
Val has a strong sense of community responsibility and is a longstanding trustee of the Maori Hill School Board of Trustees and now also the John McGlashan College Board of Trustees. She is a member of the Institute of Directors and has previously applied her skills to a range of community groups in a volunteer capacity all of which she has found to be enriching experiences.
Away from work Val and her husband have 4 children aged 10 through to 27. They collectively enjoy a good adventure and are kept busy with their respective sporting and other interests. She is very proud to call Dunedin home and appreciates the quality of the city’s character and the people who make it so.
